Balancing Motherhood and Work
Becoming a mother is difficult for any woman and it is especially so for those who work. Whether working full or part time, the situation is bound to take a toll on any mother. The juggling act between parenthood and professional is a difficult one, but it is not impossible. The key to being a successful working mother is to balance these two very different roles.
The first thing a woman should do when returning to work is rid herself of any guilt she is feeling. The fact is that people need to work in order to support themselves and their families, so what the woman is doing is contributing to this end. Working will enable the woman to provide a better lifestyle for her child than would be possible were she not to work. The woman and the father of the baby should also communicate regularly to make sure they are on the same page regarding responsibilities. Raising the baby and taking care of the home are not solely the duties of the woman. The man should help with these tasks as well, in order to relieve some burden on the woman and allow her to take some time for herself.
If a woman is feeling too much separation anxiety from her baby, she may want to consider alternate work arrangements such as telecommuting, working from home several days per week, or working an alternative schedule. Some employers are very progressive in their thinking and will happily accommodate such requests. The woman may even find that she is much more productive working from home than she was while in the office. Balancing motherhood and work requires time and effort on the part of everyone involved, not just the mother. The father should play an active role in caring for the child and taking care of the home. If going to the office every day proves too much for the woman to handle, she should discuss alternate working arrangements with her employer.
